Leprosy is a major cause of disfigurement, pain and disability in many parts of the world. The introduction of multidrug therapy (MDT) for leprosy has improved clinical outcomes, however facial nerve damage is common, and there are no objective measures to assess facial nerve status. We present a pilot study of the use of MR imaging to objectively measure facial allograft volume to assess facial nerve injury. Fifty-five subjects, of whom 19 had facial nerve damage, had facial MRIs taken and facial allograft volume was measured using a 3D computer imaging system. The volume of the facial allograft was measured in the pre-operative period in patients who had received MDT, and in the post-operative period in patients who had facial nerve repair.
